Getting a Komondor is a big thing. Apart from their temperament as natural guardians, and their unique coats, they are also giant dogs. This requires some thought and there's some things you can think about, to make sure you have all you need for your kom.

Housing

I would really recommend getting a crate. There's several reasons these are useful to have.
  • It provides a 'safe' environment for the dog, which it knows, and can treat completely as its own. If you travel with the dog, you can take the crate along, and the dog will still feel secure and at home when sleeping in the crate, even if they are in a strange hotel room miles from home.
  • It helps with toilet training. When the dog is in its crate, it is very unlikely to go to the toilet. When you come down in the morning to let them out, they are likely to go outside, and then can be rewarded. This gets them quickly used to a routine, and holding it in over night.
  • It's useful in the event of accidents. Whether you need to keep the dog confined to prevent further injury to itself, or if you need to keep it away from other people or animals, a crate serves this purpose well.
  • Used in the car it will keep them safer in the event of an accident, and also make getting them in and out of the car easier when they are young.
Komondors are a giant breed, as such you're going to want a large crate!

As far as bedding goes, I find dog beds are good when they're young, but they quickly grow large! For later on, I'd recommend getting old leather sofas. They are easily cleaned, and koms fit well on a 2 seater. Blankets or Duvets in the winter may be useful, but they get dirty quickly. For youngsters and inside crates you'll want vetbed which is very cosy, easy to wash, and relatively cheap.

You may want to get stairgates in place if there are areas that are off limits. And care should be taken with stairs and puppies. Our dogs do not go upstairs, but it may work in your house. Having said that, a kom running downstairs can cause a lot of damage to someone sitting at the bottom!

Toys, food

Food - koms eat a fair amount. If you're feeding a kibble, I'd advise getting a large container or bin for it. If you're raw feeding (I'd recommend it), you'll most likely want to get a freezer for dog food.
Bowls, you might want to get elevated bowls as these can mean less mess once the cords are longer.

Komondors can be pretty destructive, and some toys we've had have lasted all of 10 seconds. Even the expensive "extra tough" ones. They do enjoy them as puppies though. Chewing is really good for tooth care, so we always have quite a few antlers around which they spend quite a while chewing. Antlers are a bit of money, but they do last a long time and as I say, helps keep their teeth in good condition so worth it.

Grooming

Ears - to keep ears in good order you may want to get some ear powder, which dries up inside the ear and makes plucking hair easy. You can also get an 'ear wash' solution, and cotton wool pads are also useful for this job.

Scissors - I quite like a swiss army knife for this purpose. Firstly, the scissors are spring loaded, so you can cut one handed. Secondly, the scissors are really small, so you are less likely to have an accident than with a large pair of scissors. You'll probably want a few pairs of scissors as the coat grows. It's also useful to have a mat splitter later on.

Hair bobbles - Once the coat is corded, you may want to have a top knot or bunches. It's worth getting them used to this early on, so it's good to have hair bobbles around.

Wet/Dry vac - To really speed up drying, a wet/dry vac is essential, and it's worth getting them used to this early on.

Blower - Again, for drying the coat this is a good piece of kit to have.

Shampoo - I like the "white dog shampoo" that pets at home do. Cowboy Magic is also good for stubborn areas.
